About American Platinum Eagle Collector Coins

By Gerald Hampton

Sanctioned by the United States Congress and backed by the U. S. Mint, the American Platinum Eagles is the official coin of the U. S. Containing. 9995 platinum the coin was public in 1997. The coins vary in size from 1/10 to 1 troy ounce.

For those who collect coins, it is possible to obtain uncirculated coins that have been guaranteed to have not been in circulation. These coins are different because the design changes from year to year on the reverse side.

The drawing made by Augustus Saint-Gaudens was used on the $20 gold piece from 1907 to 1933. Coins in 1986 saw the drawing reintroduced. The coins can be bought in proof or bullion. Certain coins picture the drawing Walking Liberty by Adolph A. Weinman. The drawing was done in 1916 to grace the newly created 1/2 dollar.

From 1998 to 2002 the proof styles of the American Platinum Eagle used designs from the Vistas of Liberty program. As always, the bald eagle appeared on each but with each year, the eagle was shown to be in a different area of the United States. Then came the three year series that ran from 2006 to 2008. The designs were known as the The Foundations of Democracy and represented the branches of government. Each denomination has the yearly design on it. These are the only U. S. Bullion coins that change reverse designs each year.

Proof styles of all coins can be bought through the United States Mint. There are certain procedures that collector coins go through to be minted. Blank coins are placed in a press that has pigments made specifically for these coins. After the coins have been hit a couple of times to bring out the design, the design then takes on the appearance of floating over a mirror like surface. Once that is done, the coins are inspected and placed in plastic. They are then mounted in display cases with the Certificate of Authenticity included in the case. Each coin is promised to be the exact same as the next.

Uncirculated coins were added to the eagle coin family in 2006.

Available only in a 1 ounce size is the only difference between the two. Any of the other American Eagle Uncirculated Coins can be purchased in varying sizes.

Proof coins and uncirculated coins go through almost the exact same process. The main difference is the uncirculated coins are stamped with a W to show that they were minted at West Point.

These coins have their good and bad sides to them. They can be placed in IRA accounts because they are considered commodities due to their metal content. Rare coins are not normally allowed to be placed in investment accounts, but because they are valued on the metal content, collector coins themselves are not expected to increase in value. - 23314
